Why Learn Reiki in Bali?

The Island of the Gods

Bali is often called the Island of the Gods, and after a few days here, it is easy to understand why. Spirituality is not something the Balinese practise only on special occasions. It is woven into everyday life. Every morning, families place small offerings called canang sari, made of palm leaves, flowers, rice, and incense, in front of their homes, shops, and temples as a gesture of gratitude and balance. More than twenty thousand temples are spread across the island, and the sound of gamelan music and temple ceremonies is part of daily life. Learning Reiki in a place where devotion and gratitude are lived so naturally can deepen your experience in a way that is hard to find anywhere else.

Living in Harmony: A Balinese Philosophy

At the heart of Balinese culture is a beautiful philosophy called Tri Hita Karana, which means "three causes of well-being." It teaches that true happiness comes from living in harmony with the divine, with other people, and with nature. This philosophy is so important that the traditional Balinese rice terrace system based on it is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape. Tri Hita Karana shares much with the spirit of Reiki: balance, gratitude, kindness, and a deep respect for the life force that connects all living beings.

Ubud: A Town Named After Medicine

Ubud, in the green highlands of central Bali, is known as the island's cultural and spiritual heart. Its name is often said to come from the Balinese word "ubad," meaning medicine, because of the healing herbs that have grown along its rivers for centuries. Today, Ubud is home to artists, healers, yoga teachers, and spiritual seekers from all over the world, surrounded by rice terraces, jungle valleys, sacred temples, and waterfalls. It is hard to imagine a more fitting place to learn a healing art.

What to Expect from Your Reiki Training in Bali

Five Levels, One Personal Path

Punnu teaches Usui Reiki in five levels, from Reiki Level 1 through Practitioner, Master Practitioner, and Master Teacher, to Grand Master. Each level is a complete training in itself and includes teachings, practical experience, an individual Reiki attunement, a comprehensive manual, and a certificate upon successful completion. You do not need to complete all five levels. Some students come for Level 1 only, for their own well-being and personal growth, while others continue over several visits or years. You can read more about the whole path in our guide, How to Become a Reiki Healer.

Beginners and Continuing Students Are Welcome

If you have never studied Reiki before, you simply begin with Reiki Level 1. No previous experience in Reiki, meditation, or energy healing is needed. If you have already studied Reiki, with Punnu or with another teacher, you do not need to start again. You can continue with the next level, right where you left off. Simply let us know which level you have completed and in which Reiki tradition when you register.

More Than Techniques

Punnu's trainings go beyond learning hand positions and symbols. Depending on the level, you learn to give Reiki to yourself and others, develop your sensitivity to energy, work with the Reiki symbols, and, at the advanced levels, learn to give attunements and teach Reiki yourself. Meditation, personal reflection, and spiritual growth are part of every level, and the five Reiki principles are woven through the whole training. You can read more about them in our article The Transformative Power of Usui Reiki. Each student receives an individual attunement, so you receive personal attention at this important moment of your journey.

A Traditional Usui Reiki Lineage

Punnu's Reiki training is rooted in the traditional Usui Reiki lineage, passed from teacher to student from the founder of Reiki himself. His lineage goes from Dr. Mikao Usui to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, Dr. William Hauw Chen Shiung, Dr. N. K. Sharma and Dr. Savita Sharma, and Dr. Kanta Nagpal, with whom Punnu completed Usui Reiki from Level 1 to Grand Master in India. With more than 35 years of experience in Reiki, meditation, and holistic healing, Punnu brings warmth, depth, and practical wisdom to every training.

Planning Your Reiki Journey to Bali

Getting There and Where to Stay

Most international visitors arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar. From there, Ubud is usually about one to one and a half hours by car, depending on traffic. Ubud offers a wide range of places to stay, from simple guesthouses and homestays run by Balinese families to beautiful villas and boutique hotels, many within walking distance of The Yoga Barn. Staying close by means you can walk to your training each day and enjoy the peaceful energy of Ubud in the evenings.

The Weather During the Trainings

The trainings take place in November and March, during Bali's rainy season. This usually means warm, green, and lush days, often with sunshine in the morning and tropical showers in the afternoon or evening. Many people love this time of year, as the island is at its most green and a little quieter than in the busy summer months. Bring light clothing, a light rain jacket or umbrella, and something warm for air-conditioned rooms and cooler evenings.

Make It a Healing Retreat

Many students choose to arrive a few days early or stay longer after the training, turning their Reiki course into a personal healing retreat. You can join yoga, meditation, and sound healing classes at The Yoga Barn, visit sacred temples such as Tirta Empul with its holy spring water, walk through the famous Tegallalang rice terraces, or simply rest and integrate what you have learned. Giving yourself a few quiet days after your attunement is a beautiful way to let the energy settle.

How to Prepare for Your Training

You do not need to prepare anything special, but a few simple steps can help you receive the most from your training. In the days before, try to get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and eat light, fresh food. Many students also like to spend a few quiet minutes each day in meditation or reflection, setting an intention for what they would like to receive from their Reiki journey. Most of all, come with an open heart. Everything else will be explained step by step.

Your Reiki Journey Continues at Home

Your Reiki training does not end when you leave Bali. In many ways, it is only the beginning. After your training, the most important practice is daily self-Reiki, even for just fifteen or twenty minutes, which keeps your energy clear and deepens your connection to Reiki. You can also practise giving Reiki to family, friends, and even pets and plants, and return whenever you feel ready for your next level, in Bali or Switzerland. Many of Punnu's students come back to Ubud year after year, and for them, Bali becomes not only a place to learn Reiki, but a place to come home to themselves.

Begin Your Reiki Journey in Bali

If you feel called to learn Reiki in one of the most spiritual places in the world, you are warmly invited to join Punnu Wasu at The Yoga Barn in Ubud. Whether you are taking your very first step with Reiki Level 1 or continuing your path towards Reiki Master or Grand Master, you will be welcomed exactly as you are.
